It is a building of the twelfth century elevated to the rank of priory in 1104, then dependent on the abbey of St Volusien.
Unlike the other sober and intimate Romanesque churches, the priory of Saint Jean de Verges is marked by the influence of prestigious Toulouse workshops with its magnificent vaults, and its many carved motifs (acanthus leaves, animals, buttons ...).
It was here that the Count of Foix Roger Bernard II made his submission to the Church and King Louis XI in 1229, thus ending the Crusade against the Cathars. Long door of the High County, it kept its political and strategic importance until the last of the counts, Henri de Navare, became king of France ...
